What Are The Chances For Me To Go Through A Late Teenage Years Or Late Life Growth Spurt?

One of the more common questions posed by people who email to the website email is them asking the question which is a variation or derivative of “What Are The Chances For Me To Go Through A Late Teenage Years Or Late Life Growth Spurt?

This is a really common question that I see on all of the height increase and grow taller boards. For these people they are only in the very early stages of learning about this endeavors.

I have thought about putting this question in the FAQ section of the website.

If felt that the entire question can be almost completely answered by reading the two posts below

Hi, I’m ENTER YOUR AGE years old. Am I Still Growing? Can I Still Grow Taller?

What Is The Most Height Gain One Can Achieve Through Exercises And Stretching After Puberty And Growth Plate Closure?

While the question posted for this post implies that the person asking the question is hoping that a miracle will happen to them which will let them do nothing but be passive in their achievement of height increase, the question and post I linked above implies that the person who wishes to be taller is willing to do more than just hope and may be more active and assertive in their approach for height increase.

To answer the question more directly is is worth pointing out the medically defined age range for most males and females for when they stop the natural growth process.

For males, they stop growing around the 17-19 age range – This is basically exactly the end of the teenage ages since the technical definition of the end of being a teenager is around 18 years old.

For females, the stop growing around the 15-17 age range – This is basically a little below the end of the teenage years. However we do note that females in general even in their development years mature faster than males, in terms of bone maturity and also emotional and mental maturity too.

If the person asking is hoping for a late teenage years growth spurt, then they would have to be more exact on how old they are exactly. There is a major different between 17.6 years old and 18 years old for men. There are enough cases seen where the male manages to continue to add 1-2 extra inches after even the 18 years point. This is due to maybe from the late closure of the male growth plates and also the longer, bigger tail of the bell curve of the distribution of height tabulated for men. The standard deviation magnitude for the male population is large than the standard deviation magnitude for the height bell curve distribution of females.

In all honestly, I would tell the individual that their chances are very low, maybe around 0.1-0.5% if they are anywhere past the age of 17 for a female and 19 for a male. There are many people who might try to counter-argue this assessment by telling me and recounting a story of how their relative, themselves, or one of their friends beat the age range and was the exception but the numbers don’t lie.

Most people who do contact this website are already in their 20s so their odds are severely reduced. I am talking about it to mean that in terms of percentages they might have a 0.001% chance that they would even be able to get 1 inch. However this does not mean that they can’t get some real height increase by focusing on stretching out their vertebrate and realigning their posture. A large percentage of people in a given population has the potential to gain upwards (or sometimes slightly more) of 1 inch in height increase through stretching and posture correction int their 20s. However what they are doing is more like body remodeling or modification, which is NOT a growth spurt.

Growth Spurts imply that the bones in their body went through further the process of endochondral ossification and the height they did achieve is permanent, which is something that won’t go away if they stop doing the stretching.

Maybe the person who messages me might think that they are somehow special, unique, or have a situation which means that they are excluded from the majority but fit that very, very small minority of people who can still grow, but that is always assuming that they think that their growth plates are still open. I would not want to wager that the person has their growth plates still around, but are gone. If a person doesn’t have their growth plates anymore in their limbs, they still have some cartilage in their vertebrate which might still be around which will contribute to the person’s overall height through appositional growth but if those vertebrate growth plates disappear, then growth spurts are almost impossible.

There is one unique case where it is suggested that growth spurts might still be able to occur that was with with the now passed Tanya Angus. Her biography showed that she apparently stopped increasing in height when she was in her teens but her growth was reactivated when she was around 18, which is the age when most females would have complete closure of their cartilage. Of course Angus had the most severe case of Acromegaly that has ever been documented. Where most pituitary gland tumours which cause human gigantism are benign in nature, Tanya Angus had one which seemed to more malignant, at least in terms of the fact that her tumour seemed to grow bigger. If we can prove that Angu’s plates were in deed gone before her pituitary gland was activated, this might prove the idea that even with all the growth plate closed, growth spurts still might be able to happen where the body is enlarged in every single way, not just in terms of height.

So at this point, hope for the best but expect the worst. Be prepared to accept the idea that maybe you are not going to get any growth spurt but be grateful if it does happen. Sometimes the growing does happen, like what happened with Dennis Rodman with his crazy 10 inch of growth at the age of 20, but those cases are very, very rare.

I cannot find any research that deals with the heredity of late growth spurts. Do you have any information regarding this?

  2. Jason

Regarding Nick’s comment, I am curious about that as well. I’ve seen some web pages that have said it generally is, but otherwise I haven’t seen any scientific studies on it.

Hi, I’m 25 and have grown an 1.5″ over the past year (measurements were confirmed at several different places at several different times of the day). I was 5’5″ at age 10 or 11 and only grew 3/4″ by my mid-teens. Most recently I was over 5’7″. The really odd thing is that I have DDD and my latest spinal MRIs have shown increased degradation. So if anything I should be shorter, not taller.

I did have a brain MRI in my teens and was told I had “an overly generous pituitary gland.” Do you think this could indicate an issue that needs to be examined by a neurologist?

Your case is very interesting. Would you be interested in coming on to do a podcast episode on how your height has increased over the years?

      1. Allison

I’m a pretty nervous public speaker, so I don’t think I would be a good guest on a podcast. I’d be happy to answer any questions via email though.

I just spoke with my spinal orthopedist and he did say it was very unusual and the only potential cause he could think of was a pituitary adenoma. I was recently diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and joined an online support group for the condition. I’ve been talking to the online community and many have had a similar late life growth spurt, which is weird since most of us have osteoarthritis and should technically be getting shorter. So maybe there’s a link to EDS or maybe it’s just far more common than anyone has realized.

Male – US – 5′ 9.5″. I grew 2 inches between my physical examination when I was almost 27 years old and the prior one before turning 26 years old a year earlier. I grew half a shoe size as well. At first I didn’t believe the nurse’s measurements and believed it to be an error, even after she measured me again. After initially hearing that odd news, I talked to the doctor about it. He indicated that nothing was wrong and I’ve not experienced any obvious complications since either (other than smacking my head on overhead ledges that I used to clear in high school and college). I’m 32 years old now and have retained that 2 inch boost in height (believing it to be predominantly torso up since my jean length remained the same).

  4. Luke Abbott

Hey, my names Luke, and I’m 16 years and 4 months old, I am 183cm or maybe a little above that. So I’ve recently done an online tanner scale test and after many tries and becoming completely honest with myself I have accepted that I am at stage 3.7. Now if that means nothing to you before you keep reading look up ” tanner stage calculator for boys – the boys growing up in The Lord” or URL growingupboys.info/calculators/tannerstage.htm.

So based on your quick read about stage 3 and maybe 4 if you want boys in tanner scale and your extensive knowledge displayed here, what are my chances of having a last growth spurt that gets me to 6’5″ 3/4 to 6’7″? In case you want to know my mother is 5’10”, and my father was 6’1″ at his peak but now he’s got bad posture or something, haven’t seen him in while anyway. Then I have a brother who is 21 years and 11 months right now, he’s around the 6’3″ to 6’4″ mark, but he grew to 6′ when he was like 12 or something, and I’ve only reached it in the past 6 months or less. So he was ahead, and I think I may be a little bit behind in general, so that may help.

Also, I know it is a possibility and maybe a probability so I wonder if you have any advice you have, because I’m also worried that I might be doing something or not enough of something that I may sabotage it , like see nutritionist or something. Now I sleep 9 hours every night, I’m on top of that, but I’m not over confident in my diet. Now I am healthy, I don’t binge on junk or anything in fact I keep away because I’m mostly allergic to artificial things and sugar. But I’m just concerned whether I’m getting enough energy and protein and whatnot. Also I’ve just started doing strength training, but a stupid 6 times a week which has taken allot of energy, I’ve stopped now because I got so tired, it may be CNS or chronic adrenal fatigue, but you don’t need tone concerned we are soughing it out now. So just wondering whether stuff like that is sabotaging growth, and if so how could I make it not?

Now with everything in place, nothing sabotaging the chance of growth is it possible to reach my goal of 5.75 to 7 inches in my last years of puberty?

Thanks for helping me out, whether you read the entire thing or not.
    Luke.

    1. Jason

Hi Luke, I can’t speak for Michael (the owner of this site), but here are my thoughts.

Given that your mother is more above average in height than your father, I would say if you inherited predominately your mother’s height genes you may have a shot at reaching your height goal. Otherwise, I’d say given your growth stage it would seem like you should reach your brother’s height.

In terms of your lifestyle, I agree with the decision to cut back on your workout. I don’t think you want to exercise that much to the point that it makes you that worn out. If you’re concerned about whether or not you are getting in enough calories, if you’re not doing so I would suggest eating nuts (unless of course you are allergic to it). All nuts are fairly high in calories per serving (due to the fat content).

Also, for protein I think it’s best to eat a mix of plant and animal protein for general health. However, the zinc in animal protein is much more available to the body than in plant protein. (There are ways to improve the zinc availability in foods like grains and nuts, but it can be complex.) From what I’ve read, zinc is actually one of the most important nutrients involved in the height growth process.

I grew from age 18-22 one inch according to what was documented. i M 5’6 feet, but in high school i was 5’5. It happens..I think asking God and having faith helps of maybe just genetics who knows.

Hello I know you people take this seriously but MY case is very peculiar and true. My mom is 5″ flat and my dad is 5″9 which would make me 5″10 at most if im lucky but this is where it gets strange I’m 6″2 and still growing because I was 6″1 a couple of weeks ago also im 19 years of age. I know my height is permanent because when I would wake up in the morning I was 6″1 and shrank to 6″ which is normal as you know to gain an inch after sleep. Know when I wake up im 6″2 without foot wear of any kind which would make me 6″3 with shoes so tell me how the heck is it possible for me to be almost 6″4 in height which is where I believe I’ll stop growing for some reason I believe in my brain ill be an inch more to 6″5, my stepbrother is 6″2 and my nephew grew to 6″5 at his current age of 16.

  6. Darien

    Hi,
Well to start off I’m a male that’s very very nervous about my height and have been since I was 15 years old, I’m turning 20 in a week. I was only 5′ tall when I was 15. My height now is 5 foot 2 inches in the morning and I shrink back to about 5’1” during the day. That’s normal, and expected because of gravity compression but the last time I documented a height change was when I was 17 years old, which was 3 years ago. Last year when i was 19 years, I went to get a bone age study and it determined that my left hand growth plates have closed. What i dont understand is why i havent even gotten close to my dads height(5’8″)…im closer to my moms height(4’11”). Everything in my research leads me to believe I should be about 5’6″ plus or minus a couple inches and that by age 25 all growth plates through out the body are closed. But with my hand growth plates closed im nervous i wont grow anymore. I don’t understand why I am not growing and why nothing really has changed with my height in 5 years. I also dont have a full beard or mustache yet or any full chest hair. will I still get taller? I really need answers please I’m getting really desperate. Thank you!

    1. Jason

I am in a similar situation. My dad is 6’2″ and my mom is 5’3″, but I’m only 5’8″. And by the time late evening rolls around, I think I’m closer to 5’7″. What I’ve heard (I don’t know the validity of it) is that males tend to get their height from the males on the mother’s side. In my case, my grandfather and uncles on my mom’s side are all below 6′, so it seems like that’s close to being accurate for me. Is it accurate for you?

  7. Kim

I am a (female) person who has grown significantly after the age of 19.
When I graduated from high school I was 5’2.5″ (at age 19). I know that this had been verified a great number of times.
I think my weird growth pattern has something to do with it.
I hadn’t grown a millimeter since I was 12 even though everyone told me that I’d stop growing one year after menarche… Which I didn’t reach until I was 14 (unusually late for an overweight adolescent).

I was an incredibly tall child from toddlerhood-middle school, at which time everyone else shoots up past 5’3″.

    Anyway, I am honest-to-goodness 5’6″ now and I am 27.
My growth spurt has been obvious to almost everyone. I just met with my freshman year roommate last night and she said something about me being fun-sized and her husband was like, “you guys are the exact same height”. And she was astounded when she stood next to me.

I have doctors records from my senior year of high school and freshman year of college that could verify my beginning height (keeping in mind that I moved out of state for college, so it wasn’t faulty equipment) and last month when I went to the doctor, I requested that they take my height, which they haven’t done in years. I only requested because when I measured myself a few years ago I was 5’4″, and I just wanted to see if I really was taller, because I felt so much taller. Nope. I am 5’6″. Verified. Medically.

I just thought I would share… Of course I found this page because I was trying to convince myself that I don’t have a pituitary tumor (I probably don’t… I was probably just a late bloomer), but maybe it will put another worry wort’s mind at ease.

    1. Yumna

      Hey Kim,
I am having the same issue, i used to be taller then my other siblings and friends in my childhood and in mid-school but now they are taller then me. I stopped growing after 11 i think. I am m 22 now and am 4 feet and 11 inches tall .. not even 5, can you please help? can u please tell how you gained height after puberty??
I will be really really thankful to you 🙂

  8. Umer

I am 16 year and 1 months male. I have been 5″7 for about 6 months now.
My mom is 5″5 and my dad is 6″2. I have a full beard and chest hair (also shoulder and back)etc..
Well interestingly my brother who is 3 years younger than me is already 2 inches taller than me. So is there a chance for me to increase my Height?????

  9. Sam

    Hi,
First of all, I’m about 185 cm (about 6’1) in the morning and have grown like 1 inch last year. I’m 17 now and wonder if I could maybe get another late growth spurt? My dad said he had a “late” growth spurt at the end of 16. Then again I have a question what is considered a “late” growth spurt? Most people allways seem to shoot up during summer break because they sleep more, but by that time I will have just turned 18.
My dad is about 186 cm and my mom 172 cm. There are also some pretty tall people (between 195-200cm) on my dad’s side of the family. I am really focussed right now on growing. I try to eat healthy and work out about 4 times a week (hope that doesn’t stunt my growth like some people believe).
I also consider having my growth plates checked by my doctor.

I know I’m not very small and am really happy with the height I allready have, but just wondered if I could maybe squeeze out a few more inches, to maybe reach a nice number like 190 cm (6’3).

    Hi,

My 19-year-old daughter just had x-rays done of her hip/femur region and she was told that her growth plates are still open. She is an athlete (tennis player). She is experiencing pain in her right hip area. 2 years prior she suffered from a stress fracture in her left femur. One of the possible treatments for her pain is a cortisone injection into her right hip. I would like to have a better understanding of why her growth plates would still be open (she is currently 5 ft, 7 inches) and what dangers, if any, are associated with cortisone injections for someone who may still be growing.

  11. Nick

@sam your really lucky my parents are both 186 cm and 172 cm respectively and your already 185 cm. Im 181.5 in the morning and 179.5 at night. My dad was 183 cm at 18 and said he grew about 3 cm after 18. My goal is about 185. My mom parents are 162 cm and 175 cm. My uncle is 177 cm so i pretty much tower over everyone in her side. On my dads my uncles are 184 cm, 188 cm, and 190 cm and my dads parents were 185 cm and 170 cm.
I am turning 18 next week but have barely any armpit hair and only grow whiskers on my face. Any chance i could to at least a legit 185 cm.

    Hi I’m 16 , 5 foot 9 or 10
I’m wondering if it’s possible to peak at 6 foot 2 or 3 my dad is 6 foot 2 and he claims that he had a later growth spurt at 17 or 18 is that possible for me too?
My moms 5 foot 2 by the way and I’m pretty sure I have my dad’s genes .

Hey, I have these thoughts in my head about my height. I am 15 years old and I am 1.62 cm – My friends are taller than I am and nearly all of them, maybe 2-3 is the same as I am. But I feel so different and not normal when I am around them, and I know that I should not compare myself. I know that you get tall as your DNA and genes, but there is nothing wrong with my DNA and genes, my brother is 182cm. then you might ask why am I wondering and why do I feel bad, but I just feel like that I am so late at growing, nearly all my friends, has the average height already, and I dont. my brother had the same problem at my age, not growing at the same tempo as his friends, but he suddenly did when he was 16-17-18, and the same thing also heppened for my cousin, he had the same problem too, but he grew anyway. I just need to be clear at this point: I can still grow, cant I ? – I mean is it possible for me to get around 180cm- as my brother did, he had the same height as I, at my age…

Hi i am nearing 15 and i seem to plateau at just 5’4.5 for nearly 1 year already. My mom is 4’11 and my dad is 5’7. Why am i not reaching my dads height yet? I am now shorter than 97% of the people now but before i was always 50%.

  17. Niña

Hello! I’m female, age 33 and I am 4’10 in height. My mom’s height is 5’5 and my Dad’s height is 5’3. I know they are short, but my Mom’s brothers and sisters are tall 5’7 to 5’9, my Dad’s side are not and I am not lucky enough to get the height of my mom. My ethnicity is Asian. I get jealous of my friends cause they are 5’3 inches tall. I never see any Orthopedic doctor or talking to my Family doctor about it. But I am thinking if I take a pill for growth. Do you have any growth pills recommendations ?

  18. Joseph

    Hi there,

I’m not sure if anyone still reads this article, but here is my story…
I had a growth spurt in my teens and stopped growing around 15-16 years. I thought I must have inherited my mothers genes as she and her side of the family are quite short. I was sitting around 170cm high which is not tall at all.

I’ve just turned 23 and have noticed a lot of people asking me if I have grown! Infact I’ve compared myself to a few of my family and friends and I have noticed the growth myself! I have a few friends that are all around the same height and I’m either just taller or a lot taller than them now.

Additional to this, I find that I need to stretch my legs quite often, sometimes cracking/clicking when I stretch. I’m not sure if this is related or not, but I started doing this a lot more around the same time I noticed myself growing.

In the meantime I need to get myself measured again, but could this be a late growth spurt? I hope so!

    1. Chris

Do you have any idea as to how this growth spurt was triggered in addition to stretching? Could it be that your diet was enhanced with more nutrients and key vitamins – or maybe a growth pattern based on the history of your family members? Whatever it is, I’m sure a lot of people who have commented, myself included, would love to know you’re secret! I’m 19, so we have a bit of an age gap, but if I experienced what you’ve experienced, I’d be over the moon.

    I’m a 14 year old female and I’m 15 in November! I’m 5,1 and near enough everyone in yr10 this year are like 5,5 – 6,2 and then there’s me. I can’t tell if I’ve had a growth spurt or not yet!!! I was 4,9 in yr8. Please state……

    1. Jarrod Dennis

You may have hit a growth spurt depending on how much you were growing before then growth spurt I think, I’m no expert but I am 5’7″ and have grown 1 cm a year throughout the last 3 years previously. But you’re stuck with whatever you get, my Dad tells me not to worry all the time because I complain too much lol

  20. Gabrielle

Oh yes and regarding Umar’s comment, I have the same problem too. My sister who is 2 years younger than me is about 5,2 and I’m really annoyed. She started Puberty at 11 in yr7 and I started at 12 in yr7. I’ve been developing slowly and I have no idea who I’m taking after. Mum- 5,5 and biological dad- 5,9. I’m also a clone of my Mum

  21. Gabrielle

Oh and I experienced some pain near the right knee today when I stretched my legs! I hate vegetables and only like 4 of them which I hardly have and my sister loves vegetables! We both like sweets but I only eat them once in a while and she eats them when she goes out with friends

My mom is 5’6 and my dad was 6’1. I just turned 20 a few months ago and havent worked out since high school. Started back 5 months ago and i noticed ive went from 190 pounds to 310 and look like im 245 to everyone. Also my height went from 5’10 to 6’3 and still seem to grow. Doctor seems to think i had my body momentarily stop growing from overstressing it and after resting from sports for a year and having proper training again with less stress, my body is overgrowing. Im also forming stretchmarks across my pecs, biceps, back, and thighs. ive tried everything to get rid of them. Theres only been one person in my family that was over 6’2 being my uncle (6’5) and now me. When should this never happen anymore? Im tired of growing pains.

    1. Chris

I would kill to go through what you’re going through (obviously not actually kill). What do you mean by ‘proper training’? I know this doesn’t answer your question, but if you’re interested in helping my own situation by telling me what you did, that’d be extremely appreciated. I’ve never felt growing pains before, and although I know they usually just come naturally – do you think you did anything to trigger them? How did you manage to stop ‘overstressing’ your body? I don’t work out at all, and I’m wondering if that has anything to do with it.

  23. Sam

Alright, So I’m a 20 year old and 6 months male. I am about 5’5. My mother is 5’4 and my father is 5’9 or 5’10. I have a young appearance and have a slow growth pattern. I have fairly big hands, thin wrists, and long arms. I have an uncle who I share a lot in common with(He is 6’1) and weighed the same weight as I did when he was in highschool. I do not feel like a finished product. Somebody give me a little hope here PLEASE

  24. Chris

Hey, I’m not sure if this is still active, as it seems most people are listing their info and not getting too many replies, but I’ll give it a try.

I’m 19.6 years old, and will be turning 20 in March. Logically, I know that I’ve probably stopped growing; to my regret, as I haven’t grown since I was about 17. From 14 – 16, I grew from being about 5’3 – 5’7, and from 16 – 17 I’d say I grew from 5’7 – 5’8. However, I may have been measuring wrong, or maybe from drinking more calcium (milk) in my recent years (18 – 19) I’ve managed to grow to 5’9, but no more than that without shoes, socks, and measuring on a hard surface. I have never, not once, felt the symptoms of “Growing Pains”, which saddens me, as you have no idea how badly I want to be restless, feeling my bones in my legs and spine throbbing with pain. I swear, I’d be smiling so bad to know that I’m growing, I wouldn’t even mind it.

As for my family history; it’s too complicated, as my father has rarely been in the picture, but can be estimated to have reached no taller than 6’1 in his prime, with his father being around 6’3, and his twin fraternal brother, I seem to recall, was shorter than him, at maybe 5’10 – 5’11 tallest.

Additionally, I know people say a male’s height can also lean more so on his mother’s side and on the male’s in her family. My mother is no more than 5’3 in height, with her father being no more than 5’9 in height. His tallest son, born from my grandmother was about 5’8 in his prime. However, my grandpa’s tallest son born from a different woman later on in his life is about 5’10 currently. Obviously that is where it gets complicated, as he is the tallest male in my family on my mother/grandfather’s side, but has a different mother than my own mother and her siblings, likely from the second woman’s tall relatives.

As for my diet, I’d say growing up in my teen years, I often didn’t have time to eat breakfast, to which I regret so heavily, as I’m sure this played an impact, and my lunches often consisted of some water and half a sandwich. In my life, I’ve either missed meals, or eaten too much; my growing patterns have never been consistent, much like my sleep – where I will either oversleep (9+ hours) or under-sleep (6- hours).

Growing up, my mother also made us buy milk substitutes like Almond Milk and the like, which I feel had an impact on my growth, for if I grew up drinking regular Milk, I’d likely have gotten more calcium as a child. In my current life, I rarely have access to vegetables or fruits, I mostly eat proteins and grains, such as steak and rice.

My goal height would be at least 5’11, as I don’t want to be 5’9 for the rest of my life. Now, wearing footwear may increase my height to 5’10, but I still want to be taller. I have no doctor where I live and therefore cannot check to see if my Growth Plates have closed.

Can anyone recommend to me any solid, thorough, and serious advice?

      Chris,

There is no accurate way to determine a child’s final adult height very accurately. The medical standard way is just to give an estimate.

People like to believe that they were short changed on height because of something they could have done years ago. People blame it on lack of food, sleep, etc.

80% of our height is genetically determined. Even then, with tall family members, a person Sorry for the bad luck.

My son recently turned 15 and he’s only 5’6 1/2″ (same height as me, his mom). He weighs generally anywhere between 95 and MAYBE as much as 115 lbs at one time during a Dr’s’ visit, but he was ALWAYS the tallest in his class , definitely through his 1st semester of his 7th gr year (now he’s a freshman). He has not grown more than MAYBE 1/2″ inch since then. His father’s over 6′ tall both his grandfathers are short, butt one due to the fact that he was sickly as a young child, and it did have an effect stunting his growth, his uncles are all definitely no less than 6′, his own brother was WELL over 6′ tall at age 16. As a younger child, my son had 3 different MRI’s, 2 in regards to accidental and what unfortunately resulted in bring concussions, and 1 for what we thought may have been an appendix issue (if memory fully serves me correctly). He was ALWAYS the tallest in his class & his Dr and midwife always told me he was way off the charts, growth/height wise, and just extremely healthy. Do you think there’s a possibility though, that the MRI’s could have something to do with a possible stunting of his growth. His weight is said to be healthy in regards to his height.
I’m just very bothered by this, & I think it bothers him a little too especially since he was always been used to being the tallest in his class. He’s very athletic, and somewhat talented at it, but his height is an issue in it.
Do you think the fact that he had so many MRI’s at such a young age could have something to do with his possible ‘stunt’ in growth? I was always warned of the ‘issues/side effects’ of MRI’s, as well as those of x-rays, but at the time felt they were completely medically necessary and sadly unavoidable. This is the first time that the possibility has crossed my mind that perhaps his stunt in growth is due to these medical procedures. Do you think this could be the case? And if so, what can/should we possibly do about it.
As a very concerned mom I just worry he may not have another growth spurt!
Got any good advice? I feel I/my son, need some!

I’m 16.4 years old, I have grown 3 cm in the past 3 years at highschool. My father is 182 cm (6 ft) mother is 168 cm (5’6″) my Dad and Nana told me not to worry because my Dad hit a massive growth spurt at 16-17, he was about 5’4″ to 5’2″ at this age and now he’s 6 ft. Do you think there is a high chance that I will take after him and hit a late growth spurt? Also his Mum is 5’2″ so wouldn’t that mean that I should have more of a chance of growing tall because my Mum is 4 inches taller then his Mum. Also one more question, is growing 1 cm a year irregular growth for someone around my age? Please reply, I’m actually quite worried and I need some info to relieve my stress because this shit is taking too long and i just want to be tall already. Yours sincerely, Jarrod Dennis.

My case too is interesting..now i am 35 years old. when i was just 16 I nearly stopped growing until age 19. At 16 i was 5.7 and same height was reported at 19. but when i measured it again in 20 i was nearly 5.8. Then i stopped measuring height. But in a navy recruitment campaign they measured my height and reported it as 5.8.5 when i was 28….at almost 30 agin my height was measured. Then it was 5.9….02 years back height was again measured for driving licence. amazingly it has reached 177.8 Cm….That means i am 5.10…But for the last 2.5 years same height is observed without any change. So i believed that I grew until 33..But i hope i will add at least 0.5 inches between 36 to 38..before i end my growth..

My 22.5 year old son has grown perhaps an inch in the past month. I hadn’t seen him during that time and the difference was noticeable. HE hadn’t noticed (he was already 6’3″) but when I asked him about it he said he had recently had to roll down the cuffs on his jeans. I now remember that at a routine pediatrician’s exam when he was under 2 years old, the doctor said the circumference of his skull indicated he would be 6’4 – 6’6. I had a friend when I was younger who grew 3″ at 23. My concern: are there particular dietary changes he should make to support this growth? What does his body need? His diet is good, as he does not care for sweet things and eats vegetables and protein and very few simple carbohydrates.

Hi, my name is Will. I’ve been curious about my height for the past couple of years now. It’s strange because I just turned 21 at 5’9.5 (basically 5’10), and my parents are not far behind in height. Actually, my father is 5’6 and my mother is 5’9. It’s weird because males should naturally be 2-3 inches (at least) taller than their mothers, and I’m not. What gets even more weird is that I have tall grandfathers (paternal being 6’2 and maternal being 6’5). I have been growing at a slow rate of 1/4 of an inch in the past 2 years and am wondering if I’ll at least become 5’11 or 6’0 by the age of 25. I’ve tried to ask doctors about my growth plates, but they said they couldn’t check mine… Any guesstimations of possibilities I have of growing at least 1-2 more inches?

My brother is 178 cm. My dad is 184, my mother is 159. In my dads family my grandfather I think was 180, my grandmother I think was around 165-170. But in my mothers family my grandfather was 169 cm and grandmother 162 cm.

Hi, I am 17 and one month old. I am 5 foot 5 inches tall, my mother is 5 foot 7 inches tall, my dad 6 foot, and my brother is 5 foot 10 inches tall. I started puberty later then everyone else, and I’ve had only one major growth spurt where I grew 4 inches in a few months time. My feet look too big for my body I only started growing facial hair in the past month or so and it’s still barely noticeable. Also recently I’ve noticed an more hair on the inside and underside of my thigh. Finally I think I’ve noticed an increased size of my shoulders. What do you think my chances are of growing to at least 5 foot 9 inches are? By the way my uncle on my moms side was 5 foot 6 inches in junior year of highschool and by the end of senior year he was 6 foot 2 inches. Are there any chances that I could have a growth spurt like that?

    Hi,
I’m almost 16 years old and only 146.5cm tall and I’m a girl… Many say I won’t grow any taller and some say that I will. I’m really scared, so please tell me if I can grow tall to at least attain the height of 5 feet?
I’m not short because of genetic reasons 🙁

Hi I’m 17 years old turning 18 in just over 4 months I’m 5’10.5″ well a little over 5’11” right after I get out of bed my mother is 5’3″ and my father is 6’0″ but kinda looks like he’s 6’1″ or 6’2″ is there any way I can reach 6′ or possibly 6’1″-6’2″ before or after I turn 18

Hey guys, I’m 22 years old, 6’1 (186m), my 15 year old brother is 5’10.5 (179m) while my dad is 6’0 (182m) & my mum is 5’6.5 (169m). I’m a bit surprised because a year ago, I was 6’0.5 (184m) tall & pretty much concluded that I was done growing because I was already past the age of 19. I think what actually led to the increase in height is that my growth plates haven’t closed yet & I really got hooked on growing taller last year. I started doing stretches every single day, pilates, pull ups, push ups & all, increased my protein intake (animal & plant protein) & slept at least 7/8 hours per night. My goal height is 6’4 (193m) I know its very possible. One thing you guys should know is that everyone’s body is different & thats why some ppl have early growth spurts & late spurts, & growth patterns are not the same for instance, the fastest man on the planet, Usain Bolt was 6’5 at 15 & hasnt grown since then, NBA player, Anthony Davis grew an inch from 6’10 to 6’11 at age 23 over the summer & reports say he’s still growing, men basically still keep growing till they are 25 & women till 21 it all depends on your body & genetic background. I hope this comes in handy to anybody that reads though.

Its definitely possible for males to grow up to the age of 25,although most men do stop between 18-21,but nevertheless its quite possible to grow an extra 1-2 inches if your still under 25,i have a question for you sam did you hit puberty at a normal age or where you an early or late bloomer?

      Thanks

  39. Sam

Hey Keith, I’ve got good news for you, you can actually attain your goal height of 6’2 or even go way beyond that because you’re genes say you are gonna be tall, & considering your age you probably ain’t done growing yet. All you have to do is do a couples of stretches, pull ups (super helpful), pilates, jumping jacks, no weightlifting please, eat more protein, I recommend beans, beef, vegetables like spinach, lettuce, turnips, cabbages, organic milk, make sure you get at least 7-10 hours of deep uninterrupted sleep, exercise more often, ride bikes, go hitch-hiking, jog, take a walk to the park. Dude, I promise you that as long as your growth plates are still open, you will definitely have a smile on your face if you follow the tips I’ve given you. Don’t sweat it you can thank me later.
